Tretinoin in Summer: What You Need to Know

As we move into the peak of summer, it’s the perfect time to talk about how seasonal changes can affect your skin — and what you can do to maintain a healthy, balanced complexion throughout the warmer months.
One common myth I often hear this time of year is that retinoids like tretinoin should be stopped in summer. It’s true that tretinoin can make your skin more sensitive to the sun — but that doesn’t mean you need to stop using it.
In fact, there’s no clinical evidence to support stopping tretinoin during the summer — as long as you’re taking the right precautions.

Why You Should Continue Tretinoin in Summer
Tretinoin remains one of the most effective, evidence-based skincare ingredients for:
Reducing fine lines
Managing acne
Improving skin texture
Minimising and preventing pigmentation
And it's pigmentation that becomes an even bigger issue in summer. Increased sun exposure can trigger melanin production, leading to:
Melasma
Sun spots
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
This is exactly why staying consistent with tretinoin — paired with daily sun protection — is so important for maintaining even-toned, resilient skin.
How to Use Tretinoin Safely in Summer
You absolutely can (and should) continue using tretinoin through the warmer months. Here’s how to do it safely:

Apply tretinoin at night as normal
Use a broad-spectrum SPF every morning
Reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors
Avoid direct sun exposure during peak UV hours (12:00–4:00 PM)
Wear a wide-brimmed hat or sunglasses for extra protection
With these precautions in place, you can confidently continue your routine without compromising results or safety.
What’s Available at the Clinic
At Vanessa Charest Aesthetic, I offer prescription-strength tretinoin in 0.025% and 0.05% strengths, as well as Hydroquinone 4%, a medical-grade brightening agent that pairs well with tretinoin to treat stubborn pigmentation.
These products are available only after a one-to-one consultation to assess your skin, goals, and medical history.
I also stock a high-performance SPF that I personally recommend for daily use. If you're unsure which sun protection suits your routine or skin type, I’m happy to guide you.
Skincare doesn’t pause for the season. If anything, summer calls for a more mindful approach. With consistency, clinical support, and proper sun care, you can continue tretinoin safely — and enjoy the long-term results it’s known for.
If you'd like to discuss a tailored skin plan or explore medical-grade skincare options, feel free to get in touch or book a consultation.
